Floods in Mesolonghi and Etoliko (video)

Heavy rains in recent hours have brought the water level in Mesolonghi to 20 cm, with houses and streets flooded. People move around the streets in boats. There is a similar problem in Etoliko.

Water penetrates houses and cars, traffic movement is difficult. The fire department received numerous calls asking them to pump out the water. In one of the houses, firefighters freed a child by carrying him on their shoulders from a flooded house.

A video showing Mesolongio residents taking to the streets in canoes after severe flooding hit the area has gone viral.

Mesolongi was flooded on Thursday night as residents and shopkeepers frantically counted damage and losses after heavy rainfall hit the area during the day.

“This is the fourth time since 2016 that we have witnessed the same situation in Mesolonghi.”,” the professionals note indignantly, once again watching their stores being flooded.

“Yet, after the big floods of 2016, millions of euros were allocated – and advertised – for the city’s flood protection and pumping station upgrades. Today it is clear that either these works were carried out improperly or they were not sufficient to protect citizens.”

The bad weather is gradually subsiding, but its consequences remain severe.
