The Greek political landscape is clearly entering a new phase. Despite attempts Government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis strengthen its position with the help of economic initiatives – from measures announced at ΔΕΘ to agreements with supermarkets to reduce prices – ratings New Democracy don’t grow.
The party has frozen, entangled in contradictions, and the gap between it and society is becoming more and more obvious.
Most citizens express a desire political changes. They reject the initiatives of the Mitsotakis government, perceived as symbols of the cynicism of power, such as amendment about Memorial to the Unknown Soldierdo not believe in justice in the case Tempi and talk about systemic corruption. The country increasingly looks as if it is waiting for a new era.
The return of Tsipras
For the first time in a long time, the Prime Minister’s main opponent is not abstract “Nobody”and a specific person – Alexis Tsipras. His influence, according to recent polls, reaches 24.3%, although he has not yet confirmed his intention to return to politics or create a new party. This is an indicator of society’s demand for alternative to power.
Until recently, dissatisfaction with the government was combined with even greater hostility towards the opposition, which increased the feeling of hopelessness. Today a new one appears opposition pole – not yet formalized organizationally, but already tangible in the public consciousness.
After the breaking point
Events following ΔΕΘ show that ND lost the ability to control the political climate. Even if the party manages to mobilize its hard-line electorate, this will not change the general trend – the public mood has already turned.
In the rest of the electorate, apathy is being replaced by cautious hope to the possibility of a different political trajectory. This is the main intrigue of the new stage: will a force emerge that can offer a real alternative?
Greek politics enters a period of tectonic shifts. And although the current government still formally dominates, society is already making its choice in favor of change.
From the editor:
Alexis Tsipras went from a symbol of rebellious Greece to a figure included in the new European consensus. His rhetoric became restrained, his image became technocratic, and his relations with Brussels – almost partnership. In an era when Europe is looking for “soft” leaders without scandals, he looks unexpectedly modern.
Kyriakos Mitsotakison the contrary, is aging along with its system – with high-profile and extremely toxic investigations, faded rhetoric about “reforms” and policies that are no longer perceived as inspiring. His former confidence is more reminiscent of the inertia of power than a strategy for the future.
As a result, the former rebel from Syriza transformed into politician loyal to Brussels and is now able to become a face new European leftwhile the current prime minister risks remaining simply convenient but wasteful administrator.
