Nicolas Sarkozy sent to La Santé prison: the former president was greeted by prisoners

On Tuesday, October 21former President of France Nicolas Sarkozy was transferred to prison La Santé in Paris, where he will have to go through standard administrative procedures for new prisoners.

According to French media reports, when he entered the courtyard, the prisoners greeted him with shouts: “Ω, καλώς ήρθες, Sarkozy!” – “Welcome, Sarkozy!”

Immediately after the transfer, one of Sarkozy’s lawyers, Christoph Ingrenannounced at the prison gates that he had already submitted appeal for release. According to him, the former president will remain behind bars for at least “three weeks or a month” until the petition is considered.

“Shame on French justice”

Sarkozy’s defense stated that “there are no grounds for detention”. “There is no risk of a repetition of events, there is no danger of destruction of evidence or pressure on witnesses,” Ingren said, adding that the arrest was made “without an evidentiary basis.”

Other members of the defense team called the incident “a disgrace for French justice” and “a tragic day for France and its institutions.” “The court decided to take Sarkozy into custody on charges of fictitious conspiracywithout presenting any real evidence,” the lawyers said in a joint statement.

Pending appeal

Lawyers expressed hope that Court of Appeal will restore justice: “We expect the French justice system to regain the dignity it deserves.” According to information from Sarkozy’s entourage, he will be kept separately from other prisoners, in compliance with security measures provided for former government officials.

Let us recall that Nicolas Sarkozy was convicted in the case of illegal campaign financing and accused of corrupt connections with businessmen and legal intermediaries. His arrest was an unprecedented case in the modern history of France and caused a new wave of debate about the limits of the responsibility of politicians before the law.
