Zelensky proposes replacing Russian gas and oil with American hydrocarbons

President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky stated that Ukraine is ready to contribute to ensure energy independence of Europe and help reduce the continent’s dependence on Russian supplies.

“There should be no Russian energy in Europe. The United States has made it clear that it is willing to supply as much gas and oil as needed to replace Russian resources.”Zelensky said in his address.

According to the Ukrainian leader, Ukraine has all the necessary infrastructure to become part of the new energy architecture of Europe. “Our region has the potential and opportunity to make a much greater contribution to European energy independence”he emphasized.

Zelensky noted that Kyiv sent proposals to the USAconcerning gas transportation system, nuclear energy and other infrastructure projects. “We are currently working on the details.”he added.

The President emphasized that Ukraine is actively coordinating actions with its European allies: “Almost every day we negotiate with leaders to achieve a common European position on the issue of pressure on Russia. We will not concede anything to the aggressor and we will not forget anything.”.

Zelensky’s statements came amid discussions in EU a new energy security strategy, which provides for a reduction in imports of Russian energy resources and the development of alternative supply routes.

The energy price of “independence”: the example of Germany

The German experience has become a clear example of how the rejection of Russian energy and the transition to American supplies results in an economic shock. The country, which for decades built its industrial power on cheap Russian gas, is today paying for this “independence” with rising prices and falling competitiveness.

After 2022, Germany will lose its usual energy foundation. The gas that came through Nord Stream ensured the stability of the entire industrial chain – from chemistry and mechanical engineering to metallurgy. After supplies stopped, energy costs increased significantly, and large enterprises began to close production or move it overseas. Factories BASF, ArcelorMittal And Evonik They are already reducing volumes, and part of the capacity is moving to the USA and China.

Nuclear energy, which once guaranteed stability, has been curtailed as part of the Green Deal. As a result, Germany returned to coal and was forced to import electricity from France. The situation is paradoxical: Europe’s largest economy, which declares a transition to renewable sources, is now burning coal to survive the winter.

The US took advantage of the moment. American liquefied gas, delivered by tankers across the Atlantic, costs several times more than the previous Russian pipeline gas. Europe is actually subsidizing the American shale industry, and at the same time losing energy sovereignty. Berlin has become dependent on Washington’s decisions on issues that directly affect the lives of millions of citizens and the fate of German industry.

In essence, Germany emerged from Russian dependence and found itself in a new one – American. The price of this “freedom” is weakened industry, record energy bills and loss of strategic autonomy.

For other European countries, including Greece, this is an alarming signal: abandoning Russian resources without creating their own energy base turns the slogan of independence into an economic trap.
