On the hill Papura near Heraklion, archaeologists discovered rare round labyrinth from the Minoan era – a structure with a diameter of almost 50 meters and an age of more than 4000 years.
On the hill Papura near the future Heraklion airport, archaeologists discovered a unique structure – round Minoan labyrinthwhich, according to preliminary data, more than four thousand years. Excavations began in 2024 during the installation of radar systems, and now researchers are calling the find “one of the most important discoveries of the 21st century for the prehistoric Aegean.”
According to Danai Kontopodi from the Euphorion of Antiquities of Heraklion, the building is impressive not only in size (diameter 48–50 meters), but also in architecture – seven concentric stone rings located at different levels. In terms of scale and composition, there are no analogues to this structure either in Crete or in other regions of the Aegean.
Architecture of three zones: A, B and C

Zone A forms a central core – a circle with a diameter of 9.3 meters, where the western monumental entrance leads. Inside there are four walls forming a cross and four identical rooms connected by openings in the center. It is assumed that the vaulted ceiling created a dome-shaped space for meetings or rituals.
Zone B – peripheral, with smaller radially located rooms connected by a circular corridor. Initially, the corridor was an open courtyard; later partitions appeared in it. The entrances to the building were located in the southwest and northeast, and the mental axis between them passed through the center of the cruciform core.
Zone C – the outer part, consisting of terraced rings resembling crepis or a miniature ziggurat surrounded by a polygonal wall. The height of the surviving walls reaches 2.85 m, and the total area of the complex is about 1800 m².
Engineering and the era of construction
All the walls of the structure are made of untreated mountain stones, held together with clay mined on site. Careful masonry and complex geometry indicate the presence specialized knowledge and organized leadership. According to experts, construction was carried out in several stages between 3000 and 1700 BC e.with constant repairs and strengthening. This suggests that the complex was an important center for local communities for many centuries.
Purpose: ritual, meeting or symbol of power?
Architecture and finds – ceramics, lamps, miniature vessels, ritual bird-shaped bowlsea shells and decorations indicate that the object was not an ordinary settlement. Most likely this was the place community holidays and religious ceremonieswhere residents of the surrounding areas flocked.
According to archaeologists, the labyrinth could have served as a center for uniting clans or tribes before the appearance of the palaces of Knossos. Its construction could be an expression of the strength of local leaders or a symbol of collective identity. Even in the archaic period (VII–VI centuries BC) people apparently returned here to conduct funeral meals — the tradition has been preserved for centuries.
Opening value
Papura not only adds a new touch to the map of Minoan architecture, but also shows that engineering in Crete began long before the palace era. The labyrinth became a prototype of future ritual and administrative centers, where sacred and political space were intertwined. Its study can radically change the understanding of the formation of the Minoan civilization and its social structure.
Excavations are ongoing and the final interpretation is yet to come. But it’s already clear: Papura’s labyrinth – one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of our time, demonstrating how advanced the engineering of Crete was long before the mythical king Minos.
