Telephone conversation between Trump and Putin about Tomahawks and Ukraine

US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin are holding telephone conversations, which, according to the White House, relate to the situation surrounding missile supplies Tomahawk armed forces of Ukraine.

According to US sources, the conversation is “lengthy and dynamic”, and its contents will be made public after completion. The White House press service clarified: “Communication continues, the parties are in direct contact.”

According to American media, the discussion is related to President Trump’s upcoming decision on the possible transfer of missiles to Ukraine BGM-109 Tomahawk. It is expected that an official statement could be made as early as tomorrow during Trump’s meeting with Vladimir Zelensky.

Confirmation from Moscow

Kremlin confirmed the fact of the telephone conversation through state media. According to the Rossiya 24 TV channel, the discussion continues and both sides “maintain a direct line of communication.”

Previously, Moscow warned that supplies of Tomahawk missiles to Kyiv would be perceived as “direct US involvement in the conflict” and will lead to retaliatory measures. At the same time, the White House says that any decision will be “adopted with global security in mind.”

Background and context

State Duma of Russia approved the possibility of retaliatory strikes across the United States if Tomahawk is used against Russian targets. After this, fears of direct confrontation increased in Washington. The American press wrote that the Pentagon had developed plans to limited transfer of these missiles and discusses technical risks.

The current negotiations between Trump and Putin have become the first direct line of communication after a series of mutual statements and may determine the further configuration of the conflict. As diplomatic sources note, we are talking not only about arms supplies, but also about “the future of security architecture” in Europe.

What does the Trump-Putin call mean?

1. Probing the limits of what is acceptable. Washington is demonstrating that it is ready for direct dialogue even in conditions of sharp escalation. It is important for the White House to show that the United States remains in control of the situation and avoids “uncontrollable scenario”. However, every time they “probing” opponent, taking 2 steps forward, increasing the degree of tension and retreating 1 step when the situation becomes critical.

2. Strategic pause. Moscow, in turn, is gaining time by receiving a signal that the decision on Tomahawk is not yet final. For the Kremlin, this call is a way to slow down the process and increase pressure on the United States’ European allies.

3. Scenario for NATO. If Tomahawk is transferred, Ukraine will have to reconsider its entire eastern flank strategy. The appearance of such missiles on the territory of a country in a state of war actually eliminates the “buffer” between Russia and the Alliance.

4. Scenario for Russia. If the deliveries take place, Moscow may strike back at the United States. Vladimir Putin statedthat Tomahawk cannot be used without the participation of American personnelwhich means that supplies to Kyiv will mean “a new level of confrontation”. Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia will respond “adequately” in case of deliveries. Deputy Chairman of the Defense Committee Alexey Zhuravlev added: “If Tomahawk destroys Russian cities, the response will be attacks on US territory and its bases.”

5. Risk of global turbulence. Even if the missiles remain in storage, the very fact of their discussion has already launched a process of geopolitical pressure. Diplomatic circles do not rule out that the Trump-Putin call will be the first step towards a new round of negotiations about the “new Yalta” – the division of spheres of influence of the 21st century.

The world holds its breath—behind the polite language one can hear the roar of a nuclear apocalypse, and both leaders understand this all too well.
