Menidi: life sentence for man who killed his wife out of jealousy

A court in Athens sentenced a 40-year-old man to life imprisonment and a fine of 1,000 euros for the murder of his wife in May 2024 in the area Menidi. The court found him guilty of premeditated murder, illegal storage And use of weapons.

The court rejected the defense’s arguments about “temporary clouding of reason” And “actions in a state of passion”. The chairman of the court stated: “Recognizing affect requires an extreme emotional state. In this case, the defendant acted out of jealousy and control, not out of loss of reason.”

The claim of “diminished responsibility due to intoxication” was also rejected. According to the chairman, the man was “an aggressive, possessive, unemotional person.” When he was arrested, he told the police: “I did the right thing”which, according to the court, proves full awareness of what was done.

Daughter’s testimony

During the hearing, the couple’s 22-year-old daughter spoke, saying that for many years, violence and fear. “My father constantly beat his mother, shouted, was jealous of everyone, even the doctor,” – she said. The girl remembered how, after the divorce, her mother lived alone with her children and tried to rebuild her life, but after her husband returned, everything started again: drunkenness, quarrels and threats.

According to the daughter, the father stalked them and was even detained by the police for spying on them. “He already tried to kill her in 2013 – with a knife, sober, aware of what he was doing,” – she said. When asked by the judge whether he had ever “out of my mind”the girl replied: “No, he always understood what he was doing. Alcohol gave him courage, but not an excuse.”

Family evidence and motive

The brother of the deceased confirmed the testimony: “He considered his sister his property. He pulled her along the street and lowered her head into the lime. I came to Greece to protect her.”. According to him, the defendant’s aggression had no justification: “He was an evil man, he didn’t care about his children or his family.”

In his last speech the defendant stated: “I don’t remember how I killed my wife. He loved her, but was confused. I realized what I had done only two days later.” However, the court did not believe these words. The judge emphasized: “He acted with intent. His actions were conscious and thoughtful.”

The defendant’s final words

Before the sentencing, the man said: “I apologize to my children. I finished. I died. Let them live well”. The court, rejecting all mitigating circumstances, ruled – life imprisonment.

The Enkeleinda case became another link in the chain femicideswhich have been shaking Greece in recent years. The court emphasized that jealousy cannot justify murder.

Note, in Greece life is usually 20 years. For good behavior they can get you up to 12 or even 10 years.
