How is the increase financed?
The total program budget will be 24 million euros per year. These funds will be covered by internal saving resources of the Ministry of Defensewithout attracting additional taxes.
Minister of Defense Nikos Dendias stated that increasing payments to conscripts “restores justice and increases respect for those who serve on the border.” His Treasury colleague added that “this measure symbolizes recognition of the contribution of young people to the country’s defense.”
Thus, for the first time in decades, Greece is significantly increasing material support for conscripts – a step that experts regard as a sign of an attempt to modernize the army and strengthen the morale of personnel.
