In the evening of Friday (September 19) over the Baltic, the war smells. Tallinn said that three Russian MiG-31 broke into the airspace of Estonia and stayed there for 12 minutes.

The NATO reaction was instant: the Italian F-35 rose to the sky, which accompanied Russian cars outside the Estonian borders. The representative of the alliance called what happened “Another example of the reckless behavior of Moscow and a demonstration of the readiness of NATO to react”.

Estonia went further – it involved article 4 of the NATO Charterwhich provides for emergency consultations of the Allies in the event of a threat to sovereignty and security. “We demand a political answer”– said Prime Minister Christien Michal.

Estonian Defense Minister called the episode “Unprecedented in its impudence”and the head of the Foreign Ministry Margus Tsakhkna attacked: “Russia violated our sky already four times this year. But today’s invasion is a demonstrative gross aggression. The answer should be the tightened political and economic insulation of Moscow. ”

In parallel, Poland said that Russian planes flew low over the PetroBaltic platform in the Baltic Sea, violating the security zone. And just a week earlier, Warsaw herself activated Article 4 after the flight of Russian drones.

The head of European diplomacy Kai Callas called the incident “extremely dangerous provocation”. According to her, Moscow is increasingly checking the strength of the eastern NATO flank, which turns the Baltic into one of the most explosive regions of Europe.

In other words: Alarm signal sounded in the sky above Estonia. NATO is ready for consultations, but the question is already in the air-whether the next “12-minute incident” will become a much more serious conflict.
