Clarification of Gσεε: how is the work on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin – August 15?


Greek Confederation of Labor (Γσεε) presented explanations about how employees of the private sector will be paid if they work on the day August 15which refers to national holidays.

According to Art. 60 of the Law 4808/2021 And Art. 203 Presidential Decree 62/2025on such days, employees and the activities of enterprises are prohibited, with the exception of those that have the right to work on Sundays and on mandatory holidays.

In 2025, on August 15, it fell on Friday. Different rules apply depending on the activities of the enterprise:

Enterprises that do not work daily

  • Employees with payment at the daily rate are paid ordinary daily earnings without a premium.
  • Employees with a monthly salary are paid a regular monthly salary.

Enterprises that work daily

If the employee replaces on August 15:

  1. When paying for a daily rate – The usual daytime earnings plus the allowance of 75%are paid, calculated on the basis of a legal hourly tariff for the actually worked hours.
  2. With a monthly salary:
    • If the company is usually closed on Sunday and holidays, but works on August 15, the employee is supposed to 1/25 of his salary Plus, the allowance is 75% based on a legal day tariff.
    • If the company operates on Sundays and holidays legally, only a 75%allowance is paid for 1/25 of a legal daily tariff.

Additional explanations

  • You can not compensate for the obligatory weekend (for example, a vacation day) on August 15.
  • If the work on this day is performed in excess of 40 hours a week, in addition to the festive allowance, it is also paid for the payment of overtime work.
  • Employees on vacation also have the right to pay on August 15. This date is not counted among the working days of vacation. Those who receive a monthly salary do not receive additional daily earnings, but the day of the holiday is not counted on their vacation.
  • If there are more favorable conditions (for example, under collective agreements, internal rules, the traditions of the enterprise), they have priority.

Thus, Gσεεε emphasizes: On August 15, in Greece is not just a religious and cultural holiday, but also a strictly regulated day for labor relations, where employees retain the rights to pay and compensation depending on the nature of the enterprise.
