In response to criticism, officials explain: the downpour turned out to be unexpectedly powerful – in a matter of hours, the amount of precipitation has fallen exceeding the monthly norm. “The weather forecast did not foresee such a disaster,” the representatives of the local authorities note.
Meanwhile, the hills along the Gwadalup river, dotted with summer camps, remain in jeopardy. On holidays, on Independence Day, there are traditionally many tourists here, which complicates the assessment of the number of victims.
“We still do not even take on how many people can be missing,” said the city manager Dalton Rice.
The company Accuweather and the National weather service claims to warn about the risk of floods a few hours before the incident. However, judging by the scale of the disaster, the time for salvation was not enough.
