In an exclusive interview with Euronews television channel, Israeli Ambassador EU And NATO Khaim Reghev said that Israeli strikes on Iranian objects became a forced measure.
He emphasized that Tehran’s ambitions in the nuclear sphere pose a threat not only to Israel, but also to Europe:
“Iran threatens not only to our state, but also to the whole region, as well as Europe. This is a global problem. “
According to him, Tehran systematically destabilizes the situation in the Middle East, supporting terrorist organizations and provoking conflicts. Israel, according to the diplomat, had no choice but to start a military operation.
Nuclear and missile threat as the main goal
An exacerbation of the conflict occurred after Iran released 20 ballistic missiles in Israeli territory, one of which got to the medical center in Beer-Sheva. In response, according to the Israeli side, strikes were struck by key Iranian facilities, including nuclear infrastructure and command posts of the Islamic Revolutionary Corps (KSIR). Reghev explained:
“Iran has a specific plan for the destruction of Israel. They increase the potential both in the nuclear sphere and in the production of Earth-Earth missiles. Therefore, we had to act. ”
He categorically rejected the assumption that the actions of Israel were aimed at changing the regime in Iran:
“Our goal is to eliminate the threat, and not to change the government in Tehran.”
International reaction and position of the parties
An exacerbation of the situation caused tense rhetoric between Washington and Tehran. US President Donald Trump, answering a question about a possible military participation, said:
“I can do this, I may not do it. No one knows what I'm going to do. ”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a television show thanked Trump for his support, saying that Israel “appreciates an alliance with the United States.”
Meanwhile, the mission of Iran at the UN made it clear that Tehran was not going to make concessions:
“We will not humiliate ourselves at the gates of the White House for the new nuclear deal.”
Rejection of a nuclear agreement and escalation
Iran was previously a participant in a joint comprehensive action plan (JCPOA), which limited his nuclear activity in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. However, in 2018, Donald Trump left the agreement, calling him a “worst deal in history” and restored rigid sanctions against Iran.
After that, Tehran resumed the enrichment of Uranus. Now the level of enrichment has reached 60%, which is much higher than permitted 3.67%, although it does not reach 90%necessary to create nuclear weapons.
Israel strikes key objects
According to the Israeli army, during the operation, a heavy -water reactor in Arak was destroyed and several high -ranking Iranian military were eliminated. In Tel Aviv, they insist that Iran’s actions pose a real threat, despite the assurances of Tehran about the peaceful purposes of his nuclear program. Reghev emphasized:
“Israel never initiates the war without emergency. We act only when there are no other options. ”
Concluding interviewthe Ambassador of Israel at the EU and NATO Haim Reghev expressed hope for the diplomatic resolution of the crisis:
“We need diplomacy not to be formality, but by a real mechanism with specific results. Israel strives for security, not confrontation. ”
