The card does not reflect the official legal position of Turkey (for now), but rather is an academic approach that can evolve.

“The Sea Spatial Plan of the Republic of Türkiye, developed under the coordination of Dehukam with the participation of all relevant institutions and interested parties, was represented by the public on April 16, 2025. After serving in UNESCO (UNESCO) for official registration, the card is now published on the MSPGLOBAL platform and has become available to the international community.

This landmark event marks the official recognition of Turkish marine spatial planning and confirms Turkey's commitment to sustainable use and management of its marine and coastal territories at a global level ”– emphasizes in an official statement.

This map caused disputes, especially with Greece, which considers such actions as a potential violation of its marine rights, including disputes about the continental shelf and the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) around the Greek Islands.

Türkiye, which did not ratify the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), disputes the influence of the islands on the sea borders, which enhances tension. Nevertheless, Türkiye expresses readiness for cooperation with Greece in the spirit of good neighborliness, as indicated in the declaration of friendly relations and good neighborliness of December 7, 2023.
