Unprecedented medical error, 62-year-old patient in critical condition (video)

The tragic stroke of the nurse occurred at the Tzaneio Piraei hospital – the woman was overflowing the blood of another group that was not suitable for her.

The patient is in critical coating, she is intubated. Her family filed a lawsuit against a nurse, who confused patients, giving the victim the wrong bag of blood. The hospital conducts a juror of administrative examination in order to step as step to determine how the incident occurred.

According to information, the woman was hospitalized in Tzaneio on Tuesday, June 3. She had a preoperative examination with the aim of conducting a neurological operation on Wednesday in the morning.

At about 3 a.m. on Wednesday, the nurse on duty handed over a bag of blood to the patient in question, instead of transferring it to another patient in the same ward that he was intended and which had previously made blood transfusion.

It is noted that two nurses and two assistants nurses worked on the evening shift, and the patients, despite the neurological problems, were hospitalized in the 2nd pathological clinic of the hospital due to the lack of beds.

As a quick examination of the victim has shown, the blood type differed from its own, which caused a “failure” in her body. The hospitalized has developed hemolysis due to the improper blood type, and her health was rapidly worsening.

Hemolysis (from other Greek αἷμα “Blood” + λυσις “decay, destruction”) is the destruction of red blood cells, which can be caused by transfusion of incompatible blood, as in this case, or by mechanical fragmentation of red blood cells as a result of surgical procedures or the presence of medical devices.

The medical staff took all the necessary measures, the woman was intubated and immediately transferred to the intensive care unit. As of yesterday evening, a surgical operation to remove the wrapped hematoma has already been performed. According to the attending doctors, her condition is difficult, but stable for several hours.

It is worth noting that the incident does not fall under the issues of security and blood control, but everything indicates that it was a human mistake. The hospital statement says:

“Patient K. Kh. entered our hospital 06.06.2025 due to the weakness of the right upper limb and the inability to stand directly. The first CT of the brain revealed bleeding in the basal ganglia on the left, and it was initially decided to carry out conservative treatment, after which it was hospitalized in the neurological clinic of the hospital. In the early morning on 04/04/2025, she was mistakenly introduced a blood dose intended for another patient, one of the three nurses who worked in a shift in the clinic where she was treated. The patient developed severe symptoms, as a result of which it was immediately intubated and transferred to the intensive care unit of the hospital. Then she passed a new visual test, which revealed an increase in hemorrhage in the brain, and was considered appropriate from a medical point of view to conduct surgical decompression of the hematoma. Since then, it has remained intubated, in a difficult but stable state. ”

The thirty -year -old nurse immediately recognized her mistake and apologized to the patient's relatives. Of course, relatives sued her. In the hospital, the investigation will be carried out as οδιπυ (organization to ensure the quality of healthcare) and the National Center for Blood Democents (εκεα). The nurse will be removed from work for one month, while the investigation process continues.

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis expressed sincere apologies and took all the necessary measures to investigate the incident:

“In connection with yesterday’s extremely serious incident related to the mistake of the nurse in the Tzaneio hospital, the administration immediately ordered an executive investigation of the circumstances of the incident. The prosecutor was called to investigate the criminal aspect, and I asked Odipy to start an investigation of the procedures that the hospital followed and the EKEA to investigate the incident. I wish the patient all the best and sincerely apologize to her and her family. ”
