The asymptomatic carriers of meningococcal infection make up about 10% of the total population, but the indicators vary from 2% among children who do not attend kindergartens to 24–37% among adolescents and young people aged 15–24 years. The transmission of the pathogen occurs with direct contact from a person to a person with airborne droplets and is limited to the use of respiratory protection measures.
In Europe and Greece, the incidence of meningococcal infection is higher in winter and spring. The incidence of the highest among infants and young children aged 0 to 4 years.
From time to time, a flash of the disease in a certain area is possible. However, at this stage, the criteria for the outbreak of meningococcal infection have not been identified in any region of the country.

The Greek National Institute of Health (EDY) collaborates with the National Help Center for meningitis, which is engaged in the identification and standardization of bacterial meningitis pathogens. In particular, in cases of outbreaks of meningococcal infection, molecular genotyping is carried out and the identification of a responsible clone that caused a disease or outbreak.
The National Healthcare Organization of Greece issues relevant instructions regarding chemoprophylaxis for persons in close contact with patients with meningococcal infection in order to prevent secondary infections. This is the most important measure of protection against meningococcal infection.
The decision on vaccination in places of occurrence of cases of the disease is made in each case in accordance with the instructions of the National Organization of Public Health and the Greek Epidemiological Service after the evaluation of epidemiological data.
