A five -minute viewing of unhealthy food advertising increases the consumption of calories by children by 130 per day, the study showed.
On European Congress on Obesity (ECO)held in Malaga in 2025, presented a study showing that only five minutes of advertising fast food lead to an increase in calorie consumption by children. The effect is the same, regardless of the type of advertising and the channel of its distribution.
Study conducted at the County School Mersiside (England), studied the effect of advertising food on children. 240 minors aged 7 to 15 years participated in it. The goal was to find out how the content of advertising and the type of media affect food consumption.
Children were subjected to five -minute advertising unhealthy food (with a high content of saturated fats, sugar and salt), and then advertising other goods. Four types of media were used: audiovisual (television), visual (social networks), audio (podcasts) and static (paper advertising shields).
The results showed that after five minutes viewing the fast food advertising, the children consumed on average a day on average 130 calories More – the equivalent of two pieces of bread. They ate more snacks (+58.4 calories), dinners (+72.5 calories) and in general more food (snacks and lunch together: +130.9 calories) than after advertising non -food products.
It is interesting that neither the content of advertising, nor its format softened the effect: brand advertising was as effective as advertising of specific products. Also, neither the type of media nor the socioeconomic status of families influenced the consumption of calories.
