The United States reports that the Russian Federation has lost the Cosmos-2553 satellite related to the nuclear program.

The “uncontrolled rotation” of the Russian satellite was discovered by American companies watching space. In the USA, Cosmos-2553 is associated with the Moscow program to develop a new type of nuclear weapon.

According to the United States, the satellite was part of the Russian Federation on the development of anti -satellite space weapons against satellite systems such as Starlink.

He probably failed. This conclusion was reached by American analytical companies Leolabs and Slingshot Aerospace, which tracks satellites in orbit, Reuters reports on April 25.

According to them, the unusual behavior of this satellite has been observed since last year, in particular, according to experts, its uncontrolled rotation. With reference to the conclusions of Leolabs, in published on the same day an annual analysis of threats from the space of the Washington Center for Strategic and International Studies, it says: it says:

“Observation convincingly indicates that the satellite is no longer functioning.”

The Cosmos-2553 satellite was brought to orbit a few weeks before the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, February 5, 2022. It rotates about 2000 kilometers from the Earth, in the zone of increased cosmic radiation, which is avoided by communication satellites.

Moscow claims that the device is intended for radar reconnaissance and measure the level of radiation in the near -Earth space. But in 2024, the American authorities said that it is part of the Russian program to develop nuclear weapons to destroy satellite systems of the Starlink type, which are used during the reflection attacks Russia by the Ukrainian military.

The Russian Ministry of Defense did not respond to Reuters to comment on the situation.
