In the European Union, the approach to the help of Ukrainian refugees is changing, although they continue to help them. How does this happen today?
After the invasion of the Russian Federation in February 2022, tells EURONEWS, Directive EU About temporary protection became a salvation for more than 4 million Ukrainians. But the number of new arrivals is reduced. In February 2025, European countries examined the smallest number of statements for asylum, about 40 thousand, which is 25% less than in 2024.
The largest share of refugees from Ukraine today falls on Germany – almost 1.8 million people, or 27.3% of the total number of refugees in the EU. Two weeks ago, Berlin became the last European capital, which announced changes in the benefit system for this group of asylum suppliers. And what about other countries?
Hungary She canceled the placement of Ukrainian refugees, who arrives from the western regions of the country, which she now officially considers securely considered safe. The recipients of temporary protection are paid 22,800 forints (about 55 euros) per month and an additional 13,700 forints (about 34 euros) per child.
Polandwhere the second largest community of Ukrainian refugees is located, recently extended the legal stay for asylum suppliers who left Ukraine after January 24, 2022, until September 30, 2025.
But people who accept Ukrainian refugees or offer them food no longer have the right to monetary compensation. It is still quite easy to agree with the local authorities. A lump -sum payment in the amount of PL300 (about 70 euros), which refugees had earlier, was also canceled.
However, Poland allows Ukrainians to receive a personal identification number, opening them the right to work and free medical care. Ukrainian children can still receive 800 zlotys, like Polish children, but only on condition that they are attended by local schools.
Norway became one of the first European countries to tighten the system of benefits. Thus, in the country they tried to solve the problem of the “unacceptable number of arrivals” shortly after the start of a full -scale invasion. The government cut children's aids and limited the possibility of people with temporary protection to travel between Ukraine and Norway. The use of hotels as refugee reception centers is also limited.
In early March Slovakia introduced new rules for Ukrainians who arrived after February 28, 2025. The maximum term during which they have the right to be in the reception centers of migrants is reduced to 60 days from the previous 120, and the allowance for accommodation is now provided only during the first two interprains.
The authorities explained this by the fact that Ukrainian refugees usually find work and housing within two months after arrival in Slovakia. Changes will not affect vulnerable population groups, including children under five years old, people over 65 years old and single parents with young children.
In Estonia Each family of Ukrainian refugees can claim a one -time compensation in the amount of 1,200 euros to cover the cost of renting housing. However, the new rules require that the application for payment is submitted within the first six months after receiving the first residence permit.
In addition, refugees can receive compensation for translator services in the amount of up to 3200 euros per family and 1,600 euros for a single person for two years. Estonia also provides children under the age of 19 years of age of 80 euros for the first and second child in the family, and 100 euros for the third and subsequent. There are also benefits for parents looking for asylum in Estonia with a child until one and a half years old.
Austria: It is necessary to learn the language. The government extended the right of Ukrainian refugees to stay in the country until March 4, 2026. Ukrainians who have the so -called “blue card” can now apply for a full right to work. But with us, that they speak German at A1 level.
Czech Republic I tied a new scheme for a long -term residence to the financial minimum, which refugees should have a year. Germany, meanwhile, plans to reduce the allowance for single people more than 100 euros per month – from 563 euros to 441 euros.
As can be seen from the list of transformations introduced by countries, we are talking about the gradual tightening of refugee requirements.
The German Federal Department of Migration and Refugees on Thursday, April 24, reported that between November 1, 2024 and March 31, 2025, the beginning of 2157 investigations in relation to people who received asylum in Germany and then went to their homeland. Officials provided the corresponding numbers to Welt Am Sonntag.
Such investigations can lead to refugees who have received various types of shelters In GermanyThey can lose it. In the fall of 2024, the Government of Germany, with the participation of Social Democrats, “green” and free democrats, led the so-called “security package” through the Bundestag.
Among other things, it includes a rule according to which traveling to their homeland in most cases leads to a loss of protection provided by the German state. Exceptions are made only for refugees from Ukraine And for cases when such trips are absolutely necessary, for example, if we are talking about a serious illness or death of a family member.
The reason for the adoption of the “Safety Pack”, which tightened and a number of other provisions of migration legislation, was a knife attack in the city of Zolingen in West Germany at the end of August 2024. Three people died, the suspect – a citizen of Syria, who did not receive asylum in Germany, but remained in the country.
