The German media unanimously criticized the plan of US President Donald Trump to stop the Russian war with Ukraine.
The American media said about the details of the peaceful settlement of Trump on Wednesday, April 23. If they believe their publications, Washington proposes to recognize the annexation of Crimea by Russia without embarrassment in expressions, the leading German publications call proposal the Plan of the surrender of Kyiv and the adoption of the key requirements of Moscow. The assessments also sound about the “backstage conspiracy” – Washington agrees to unilateral concessions to Moscow at the expense of Kyiv and Europe.
Tageszeitung: Kyiv cannot agree to a backstage conspiracy. In the commentary, published Under the heading “Putin is rewarded, Ukraine is abandoned”, Barbara Ertel from the Levoliberal Tageszeitung notes: the plan of US President Donald Trump means that “Vladimir Putin’s aggressive war still bears.” In her opinion, this is how the proposal of the current authorities of the United States should be understood, which “from the point of view of Kyiv, it is probably better to call surrender.” After all, according to the publications of the American media, “Washington recognizes the annexation of Russia Crimea, as well as a partial occupation of four regions – Lugansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhya.” Barbara Ertel is indignant:
“In exchange for a friendly concession of Moscow, which may still agree to the ceasefire,” (…), the United States is ready to lift sanctions from Russia and establish closer economic relations with it. Ukraine, more precisely, what remains of it, is thrown to the feet of Europeans. Security guarantees – please, but without us! For Trump, who also neglects democracy, human rights and the rule of law, like his new spiritual brother Vladimir Putin, this is a real deal. The main thing is to get rid of the burdensome problem in the form of Ukraine. And if the dollars with rubles go, the better. “
The author of Tageszeitung notes the obvious – Kyiv cannot agree to such a backstage conspiracy. And he wonders: “And what about the Western allies of Kyiv?” Then she answers him like this:
“The idea of the possibility of an imposed world, concluded under pressure, has been extended for a long time. Now it can become a reality. Refusal of the US peace plan, an expression of solidarity with Ukraine – all this is good. But this should not be the only answer.”
Conservative observer Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung Rainhard Fezer is also very Critically evaluates The American plan for the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, calling it “stillborn” and helping Vladimir Putin. The United States accepts the key requirements of Moscow, not requiring anything in return. According to Fezer, the key points of the plan are unacceptable for Ukraine, in particular the recognition of Crimea by Russian territory. On the other hand, “the Moscow regime has no reason to make concessions, because in case of refusal, nothing threatens him.” The FAZ observer believes that Donald Trump is not even trying to exert serious pressure on the Kremlin:
“Trump could have done this if he had demonstrated to him the capabilities of Washington: more military support to Ukraine and more stringent sanctions against the Russian Federation. Instead, the US authorities are practicing proactive subordination, accepting the key demands of Moscow without providing anything in return.”
In such a situation, it is noted in a commentary, Putin does not have to abandon his old maximum requirements. Therefore, “Washington’s statement that he will stop his intermediary efforts, if both warring parties do not accept his proposals, causes only an ironic smile in Moscow.” If Donald Trump really abandons his attempts aimed at terminating hostilities, Moscow will not lose anything, Fezer is convinced:
“Even if nothing came out of the Kremlin’s desired Kremlin in this case, Putin would be in a more advantageous position than before. Because American proposals directed almost exclusively to the detriment of Ukraine make it clear that Kyiv has practically lost its most powerful ally to date.”
As a result of these events, the FAZ observer predicts, the split in the western alliance will become even deeper. “And, from the point of view of Putin, this is also a win: Trump undermines the authority of the United States, showing how easily it can be driven by the nose,” Rainhard Fezer summarizes.
Die Welt: Donald Trump's “peace plan” is a beautiful wrapper that deliberately misleads. This is a deal of the United States and Russia at the expense of Ukraine and Europe. Clemens Versino in the conservative Die Welt went out under the heading “Capitulation plan for Ukraine”:
“The plan not only harms Ukrainian interests, but will also have consequences for Europe. According to the Axios publication, Donald Trump” Peace Plan “is the surrender of the Americans to the demands of Russia. When it comes to Russian interests, the proposals are formulated very specifically. For example, the United States is obviously ready to recognize the Russian annexation of Crimea and the actual control of Russians over the rest of the occupied territories East of Ukraine “.
Virgin adds that Trump also sacrifices Ukraine’s security interests for the future, excluding the possible membership of the country in NATO. However, the proposals “remain foggy when it comes to the main interests of Ukrainians.” It is said about “uncertain peacekeeping forces in Ukraine, in which the United States, obviously, does not want to participate themselves.” (…) Help in the restoration of Ukraine is also spelled out fuzzy, as well as the question of whether the United States will at least participate in this, Die Welt clarifies.
Therefore, Trump’s “peace plan”, as stated in the commentary, “creates a precedent and encourages further imperialist wars of Moscow – because, having recognized Crimea by the Russian, Americans authorize violent changes in borders on the European continent.” This is not a recipe for a sustainable peaceful decision, according to the Trump administration, but rather the creation of an incentive to continue colonial expansionist policy, Klems Vergin is sure.
According to his assessment, the plan set forth by the Axios, in fact, is a deal between the largest powers, the USA and Russia, due to the third parties – Ukraine and Europe. Vergin suggests:
“The proposal is so unilaterally pro -Russian that it seems that Washington wants to lure Kyiv of a pre -prepared trap to blame President Vladimir Zelensky of failing peace negotiations – after all, Ukraine can only reject. And this would give the Trump administration, even without reaching the world, a preposition for the final termination of assistance to Moscow and returning to ordinary relations with Russia.”
According to him, Trump’s one -way plan is also evidence that the United States is no longer interested in maintaining an old world order or leading a free world. Die Welt commentator concludes:
“Instead, Trump, it seems, aimed at the entry into the Club of Revisy Great Powers who want to divide the world among themselves. If Europe does not want to become a victim of this new club, it should oppose this American surrender with Ukraine.”
