The American Academy of Sleep Medicine emphasizes the clinical significance of drowsiness and warns about its impact on health, performance, mood and quality of life.

The article was published in the journal Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine Academy. It calls for medical workers, politicians and researchers to pay paramount attention to the assessment, control and treatment of drowsiness in order to improve public health.

The article emphasizes that drowsiness is an indicator of insufficient sleep and an important symptomwhich is reported by patients and which is associated with sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea.

Studies show that daytime drowsiness, inability to maintain wakefulness and concentration during the day, is associated with an increased risk of cognitive disorders, accidents, accidents at the workplace, as well as mental health problems – depression and suicidal thoughts.

Drowsiness can be a side effect of diseases, taking some drugs and lifestyle factorsthat contribute to chronic lack of sleep. Academy President Eric Olson says:

“Drowning is a serious health problem with large -scale consequences. From traffic accidents due to drowsy driving to errors at the workplace and long-term risks for health-the consequences of excessive daytime drowsiness daily affect people and society. Given that a third of adults in the United States report excessive drowsiness, one cannot underestimate the importance of identifying interventions that recognize, evaluate and treat it. ”

The statement of the Academy’s specialists was supported by 25 medical and scientific organizations.
