Holy Kinot Holy Mount Athos sent a new letter Minister of Digitalization of Greece Mr. Dimitrios Papastergiu, in which he expresses anxiety in connection with the adoption of a law providing for a mandatory Assigning a personal number All Citizens of Greece, starting on August 3/16, 2024.

Athos monks note that Personal numberwho will be assigned to every citizen and contact a lot of personal data in a single digital system, controlled by the General Secretariat of the state administration information systems, causes reasonable fears Both themselves and in a significant part of society.

The letter emphasizes that such an obligation is absent in the directives of the European Union, and it is proposed that the assignment of a personal number is voluntary, and not obligatory, at the choice of each citizen.

The message ends with an expression of hope for the positive response of the minister. It is signed by all representatives and rectors of twenty sacred monasteries of the Athos mountain. Full text of the letter:

Holy Kinot Holy Mount Athos
Karies, April 1/14, 2025
Protocol No.: φ.7/42/893

His Excellency
Minister of Digital Control
Mr. Dimitrios Papastergiu
Athens

Your Excellency, Mr. Minister!

Having learned that after a recent vote in parliament for the bill of the Ministry of Digital Department on “making a personal number in the identity of the personality of Greece citizens”, a mandatory issuance of a personal number is assumed to all citizens, starting on August 3/16, 2024, we again turn on this important issue.

The personal number, which by law will be assigned to every individual and will invariably remain throughout life, can be associated with many personal data in a single system, controlled by the General Secretariat of the information systems of the state administration.

Considering that such a responsibility does not exist, according to the directives of the European Union, we, sharing the fears of many citizens of Greece, as well as us, Athos, consider the possibility that the issuance of a personal number is not mandatory, but voluntary, at the choice of every citizen.

Expressing deep respect and confidence that you are positive about our petition, we remain with respect and prayers.

All representatives and rectors of the twenty sacred monasteries of the Holy Mount Athos,
Members of the general meeting.
