There are less than a week left before Easter. However, a sharp increase in prices affects the activity of Greek buyers, and the Easter table this year will cost more.
As in other countries, in Greece, eggs are painted for Easter, cakes are baked, meat dishes are prepared for the table and gifts are bought, but … Eggs, meat and chocolate prices rose. The government is trying to help consumers: there are a supermarkets “Easter baskets”consisting of fifty inexpensive goods.
Despite this, according to the Institute of Consumers, this year Easter table will cost 9% morethan in 2024. EURONEWS publication talked with buyers in the Barvakios market, which share their impressions:
“Last year, the lamb cost about 10 euros per kilogram. This year prices rose. What can we do?”
“The prices are the same. Well, or almost last year. I still did not decide what to buy. I'm going to return and see.”
“There is a very big difference in prices compared to last year. In the Varvakios market, the situation is catastrophic.”
Market Director Andreas Nyotis says:
“Prices for lamb and goat begins from 10-12 euros per kilogram. And we are talking about most stores here, in the Barvakios market. Compared to last year, there is a low growth, at least 1 euros.”
Experts predict that the price of lambs beaten in meat shops to Easter will exceed 15-16 euros per kilogram. Eggs, according to the Institute of Consumers, rise in price by 12%. Prices for Easter cake are set depending on the regions and bakers.
As for candles, the simplest can be found in three euros. The cost of candles with a pattern or toys will be approximately 13 times higher. Chocolate Easter eggs, mainly due to prices for cocoa beans, went up by 30-40%
The total expenses for Easter lunch for a family of four are estimated at 110-145 eurosthat is, about 12 euros more than in 2024. To restrain the increase in food prices, the government presented a special “Easter basket”, which premiere took place on April 7th. You can buy it only in supermarkets. “Until now, when compared with the last year, activity in the Easter market has been reduced. However, in the coming days, store owners expect that it will increase, since employees of the private sector will receive Easter bonus for salaries.”
