The 44-year-old bonobo, or dwarf chimpanzees, who understood human speech and played video games, died in the USA.

The cause of the death of Bonobo-Genia in the research center, where he has been his whole life, is unknown, about the death of the animal Reported Workers of the initiative to preserve and cognition of monkeys (ACCI).

Bonobo Kanzi grew up in captivity and was an object many studiesaimed at understanding the process of cognition of monkeys and the origin of the human language, writes LiveScience. He was born on October 28, 1980 in the Center for Language Studies of the University of Georgia.

Scientists spent many years to teach Kanzi's adopted mother to communicate with the help of special symbols – lexigrams. The adult female Bonobo Matata was not interested in scientists' lessons, but Kanzi surprised researchers with interest and quick study of symbols. Unlike other monkeys, who were taught to communicate with lexigrams, this bonobo himself became interested in training when he was present in his mother's lessons.

In the end, Kanzi studied more than 300 characters that called various objects, actions, as well as abstract concepts, informs Scientific American. In addition, Kanzi combined lexigra to create new meanings. This achievement revealed an important aspect of the animal’s communication – symbolic thinking, which, as it was believed, are capable of only people.

According to ACCI, Kanzi became “the first big monkey to demonstrate an understanding of spoken English.” During one study, scientists experienced the linguistic abilities of eight -year -old Kanzi and a two -year -old child who gave 660 oral instructions. It turned out that the monkey surpassed the human baby and showed that it has the level of understanding of speech that a two -year -old child has.

In another study, Kanzi studied some signs of the American brutal language, watching the video of the Gorilla Coco who used it.

Archaeologists Nicholas Toto and Katie Shik from the University of Indiana taught Kanzi to make stone tools. At the same time, the animal used one stone as a hammer, which separated sharp parts from another stone, for which it was called “Bonobo-Genia.” Later, Kanzi invented his own technique for the manufacture of stone tools – he threw stones on the hard floor to get rid of sharp scales. He also used fragments to open a box with a treat.

In addition, Kanzi was taught to breed a fire and cook food. Thanks to this, scientists proved the ability to learn behavior, which is considered key to human evolution.

Kanzi also resorted to a combination of known words and expressions to create new ones. Once he threatened to bite the researcher, which in the end did, but then he apologized for this for several months. To describe the situation, Bonobo invented the phrase “Unpleasant Surprise”, reports iflscience.

The researcher Jean Potz said that once Kanzi used two symbols known to him to describe the beaver that he saw in nature in Iowa. “He combined the symbols“ water ”and“ gorilla ”, the latter meant something terrible in his world. Now I always think about beavers as about water gorillas,” the researcher admitted.

Later, Kanzi was taught to play video games Pac-Man and Minecraft. Despite the achievement of Bonobo, his linguistic capabilities remain the subject of discussions among researchers. Some believe that Kanzi skills are a way of communication, not a language. The latter, in particular, was owned by Gorilla Coco, who could “speak” in the language of gestures.
