Yesterday, March 18, a list of seven most vulnerable monuments and cultural heritage objects in Europe for 2025 was published. It was published by Europa Nostra, a leading network of civil society on European cultural heritage, and the Institute of the European Investment Bank.
The program “7 objects under threat” started in 2013. Now it has become The key initiative of the civil society aimed at saving the European heritage, which is at risk. The program acts as a catalyst for mobilizing expert knowledge, termination of improper development and/or providing the necessary state and private support, including financing.
The object included in the list receives monetary support from the EIB cultural heritage Fund in the amount of 10,000 euros: to assist the implementation of the approved event, which will contribute to the protection of the object. Among the seven most vulnerable objects of cultural heritage and monuments in Europe by 2025:
- Fortress Mononasia, Greece.
- Monastery and settlement Arakelots, Armenia.
- Nyborg castle, Denmark.
- Big synagogue in Orel, Poland.
- The modernist complex of the General Staff in Belgrade, Serbia.
- Pool Valhalla, Gothenborg, Sweden.
- Gardens of the Tower of Queen Victoria, London, Great Britain.
The announcement was made at the online event, which was organized by Gai Claus, the vice president of Europa Nostra, and Shiva Dustdar, the head and director of the EIB Institute, as well as the Glennaya Mikallef, the European Commissar for Interocation Justice, Youth, Culture and Sports, Culture, Culture, Culture, Culture Writes CNN GREECE.
The event attracted participants not only from all over Europe, but also from abroad, including individuals who proposed the places of holding, as well as representatives of the selected places. This year's list included:
- 3 objects of cultural and natural heritage-Nyborg Castle, Mononasius Castle and Tower Gardens in London, which is threatened by the construction of new invasive buildings and improper development projects;
- 2 modernist buildings – a complex of the General Staff in Belgrade and the Valhalla basin in Gotyrog, which faces inevitable demolition;
- 2 Monuments of religious heritage – the monastery and the settlement of Arakelots and a large synagogue in Orel, who are threatened by neglect or lack of funding.
Monuments and objects are selected taking into account their The importance for European heritage and cultural value, the seriousness of the risk to which they are exposed.
The level of activity of local communities and/or the involvement of state and private entities in the salvation of these objects was crucial. Another selection criterion was the potential of each place to act as a lever of sustainable socio-economic development.
The final selection and approval of the list of 7 objects was made by the board of directors of Europa Nostra. The choice was among 14 monuments and objects of cultural heritage, previously selected by the advisory committee of the program “7 objects under threat”.
The proposals for objects included in the “7 in Dangers” program were presented or supported by members of Europa Nostra, as well as members of the European Heritage Alliance.
Now, experts will collect information and meet with key interested parties to evaluate objects and issue a technical report with proposals for actions.
