The court in Barcelona approved the euthanasia of a 24-year-old girl suffering from the paralysis of the lower extremities, the appeal of her father is rejected. Commenting on the decision, Judge Irene Urban said:
“The participants in the process agreed that the young girl suffers from a serious chronic and incurable disease, without any evidence of the opposite.”
The judge claims that a young girl is able to decide on her “very personal” law, despite her father’s allegations of her mental disorders.
The girl, who is now 24 years old, in 2022 made an attempt to suicide, tells CNN GREECE. After falling from the fifth floor of the house, she suffers from paralysis of the lower extremities. The girl officially filed a petition for euthanasia in April 2024. In July of the same year, experts of the Catalan assessment committee approved her request, since she was fully consistent with the law that reads:
“Any person suffering from a serious and incurable disease or experiencing a chronic pain that makes it incompetent can seek help from a doctor to die and thereby avoid unbearable pain.”
Shortly before the appointed date of euthanasia, on August 2, the court accepted the appeal filed by the ultra -conservative association of the ABOGADOS Cristianos (Christian lawyers), representing the girl's father, with a request to suspend the process.
The man claimed that his daughter suffers from mental disorders that “affect her ability to make the right and conscious decisions.” He stated that the girl in the past several times tried to commit suicide, hinting at the same time that since then she changed her mind, because she no longer feels such “unbearable pain”.
However, during the closed trial at the beginning of this month, the young girl again asked for euthanasia.
In 2021, the Spanish parliament approved the law on the decriminalization of euthanasia, which made Spain one of the few countries EUwhich allows patients with chronic and incurable diseases to independently decide on leaving life. However, the conditions for achieving this goal remain very strict. In particular, the applicant must “fully realize” his actions at the time of filing the application, and it must also be submitted in writing and confirmed later to be finally approved by the assessment commission.
