Clean coast, cozy beaches, healthy ecosystems – all this is the goal of the Typhoon project of the Afanasius Charity Fund K. Laskaridis.
The initiative has been operating for six years – Project participants not only clean the Greek coast, but also try to give a useful example to all residents and guests of our country.
It is no secret that sometimes on Greek beaches you can find literally everything – cigarette butts, toys, plastic and glass bottles, food packages, bags, bags, clothes and shoes. It is not only uncomfortable and ugly – it Dangerous for marine ecosystems.
Faced with this reality, the “Typhoon project” of the Afanasy Charity Fund K. Laskaridis For six years, he has been trying to create pure coasts. And they successfully succeed. How?
A huge contribution to the cleaning of the coastal territories of our country, even the most inaccessible, makes the Norwegian vessel 72 meters Typhoon, 35 members of its crew and five high -speed boats.
At the beginning of his activities in 2019, Typhoon cleared the island coast of Greece and most of the mainland. Executive Director of the Peggy Foundation Xirotagaru in interview CNN GREECE noted that in February 2023 it began Repeated clearance cycle:
Typhoon visited a total of 1099 inaccessible shores, 72 of which were cleaned, and the remaining 1022 were clean. Almost 313 190 meters of the coastline and more than 19 tons of garbage with a total volume of 689 cubic meters were covered. The crew of the Typhoon during this mission managed to collect 703,734 garbage items, collecting them manually one at a time, up to the smallest grains of foam. ”
The last “stop” of the Typhoon mission took place in the Ionian Sea. What are the crew members encountered? Ms. Xirotagaru says:
“The waste that we encounter is diverse: disposable cups, plastic water bottles and all types of plastic. Cigarette butts, foam, whole wooden pallets, building materials, bottles of shampoo, detergents and branded goods that can come from all over Mediterranean. We also find a lot of toys, shoes and clothing items. ”
Answering the question of what picture they see, returning to the destination for the second time, Ms. Xirotagar notes:
“The images that we see and the data that we receive daily instill optimism. And this is because the same beaches that we remove for the second time most often have improved pollution indicators. In the Ionian Sea, in particular, on Itak, the level of improvement was 100% on the same coasts that were first cleaned in 2022. The level of improvement on Lefkad was 88%, and 80%in kefalonia. Zakinf showed an improvement in the coast of the coast by 75%, and Corfu and the islands adjacent to it reached 71%. ”
Now, she notes, Typhoon for the second time is located on the Athos Peninsula, where the Holy Mountain is located. She expresses the hope that “the data that will be obtained as a result of treatment work will once again pleasantly surprise.”
Repeated cleaning conducted by the Typhoon contribute to the formation of comparative indicators, says Msirotagaru:
“We can understand how useful our work was. And it was very useful, because we see that the beaches became much cleaner, most of them. With the exception of those few who are polluted either because of marine currents or because of other factors. We have the opportunity to see the result of our work and understand problematic moments so that we can inform each region about them. ”
At the moment, within the framework of his repeating cycle of action throughout Greece, Typhoon went on the route for the second time: to Kiklods (Keya, Kifnos, Serifos, Sifnos, Milos, Kimolos, Polygos, Sikinos, Amorgos, Santorini, Irakli, Schinuss, Ios, Kato Kufonisi and Parov-Antiparos), to north The Aegean Sea (Skiatos, Patrolos Agios Georgios, Tasos), to the Ionian Sea (Itaka, Kefalonia, Lefkas, Zakinf, Corfu) and to the mainland (laconia, magnesia, Messinia, Pressuza, Igomen, Elijah, Athos Peninsula).
