The increasing demand for low -alcohol and non -alcoholic wines makes European winemakers, including Greek ones, adapt to reality.
A change in the direction can help them cope with economic challenges and a fall in consumption.
EURONEWS publication Pays attentionthat today's Europe significantly reduced alcohol useespecially this trend is characteristic of young people. Wine consumption is part of the cultural history of Europe, but experts urge winemakers more actively To master the growing market of low alcohol and non -alcoholic winesWhat can be the key to the suspension of a negative trend in the economy.
In 2023, the inhabitants of the European Union drank 107 million hectolitras of wine – this is almost half of the world consumption. Nevertheless, for many years, wine consumption has been reduced. From 2010 to 2020 in EU it decreased by almost a quarter. It is expected that the indicators will continue to decline, albeit a slow pace.
The reasons for this, experts believe, are health problems and changing alcohol consumption habits. And gradually the idea with low alcohol or completely non -alcoholic drinks began to be realized.
In 2024, the European Commission created a special analytical group to assess the situation in the wine industry. The reason was explained by the journalist of the publication Herardo Fortune:
“The solution of current problems that the wine -making sector faces: extreme weather conditions, methods of adaptation to climate change and the environment, as well as a change in consumer tastes.”
According to him, taking into account the current difficult situation in international trade the export of wine has decreased, and domestic consumption has also decreased. Therefore, the analytical group recommended that representatives of the industry study the segment of low -alcohol or non -alcoholic wines, which are confidently gaining popularity.
The market potential of European manufacturers will grow, since the size of the world market of non -alcoholic wine will increase from 8 to 14 billion euros by the end of 2031. This means that the annual growth rate will be more than 10%. The largest sales markets are located in the USA, Canada, Australia and India.
And if a few years ago the situation was different, now European wine producers seem to have come to terms with the idea of producing non -alcoholic wine. However, Eric Sarjakomo, Deputy Chairman of the European Parliament Committee on Agriculture, believes that the balance between the traditional interests of winemakers and new opportunities is a difficult task for European wine producers.
According to him, the industry has every opportunity to succeed. It is always difficult enough to abandon centuries -old traditions and accept changes, however Blood wine can become a delicious and healthy alternative for lovers of non -alcoholic beverages. So in the coming years, if European winemakers fully join the project, this will be an excellent opportunity for business.
