Santorini: a change in the model, constant vibration, “we do not know for sure what is happening”

Seismographs record constant vibration on Santorini, “perhaps it is caused by the fluid movement.”

The seismologist and professor of geophysics Luis Donoso speaks of a significant change in the nature of earthquakes on Santorini in a post on X, who even retweeted the European-Mediterranean Institute:

“Over the past 40 minutes, a significant change in the seismic picture has been noted at the region’s stations. Thira stations (Santorini) and Ape (Apiratos) show a steady growth of seismic amplitude, which is currently continuous. “

The European-Mediterranean Institute in its message, in response to comments with questions about what can happen and what the audible sound is connected, notes:

“This is confirmed. In the area of Santorini there is almost constant vibration. At this time, nothing is visible (because the night), but some kind of noise is heard. We do not know for sure what is happening. Constant vibration is often caused by fluid movement. ”

More than 100 earthquakes, of which 2 with magnitude m favor and not a single with M≥4.5, were registered on February 13 by a seismological laboratory of the University of Atheno. According to the daily analysis of the seismic data of the laboratory, the two strongest earthquakes with magnitude 4.4 occurred at 17:40:09 and 17:42:22 (local time).

In today's statement of the Interdisciplinary Committee for Risk and Crisis of Athenian University, it is said that the distribution of epicenters is mainly limited by the area of 10-12 km southwest of Anidros, where the most powerful earthquakes were recorded:

“On February 13, outbreaks of continuous microsyismicity lasting about 1-2 hours were not observed, which were often observed throughout the previous period. There is a general decrease in the number and strength of earthquakes. ”

Since the beginning of seismic activity in the Santorini-Amorgos zone from January 26 to February 12, 2025 Seismological laboratory (SL) of the University of Athenian, using artificial intelligence, discovered and localized a total of more than 17,500 selected earthquakes, of which more than 15,400 with magnitude m≥1.0.

On February 12, more than 1000 earthquakes were registered, of which about 190 had a magnitude MHARAM, 16 earthquakes – MHELS – MHELS and 5 Earthquakes – M≥4.5, and the strongest earthquake had 5.0 magnitude.
