How the Greeks celebrated Valentine's Day


Chocolate, flowers, plush bears … So how many Greeks purchased gifts to Valentine's DayThe researchers tried to figure out.

This year in Day of all lovers The Greeks spent an average of 43.6 euros (from € 2 to € 1.507). These are the data of the survey conducted by the Marlab marketing laboratory University of Macedonia.

25% of respondents said that they “bought gifts”, and 36% of respondents said that they “accepted gifts”. Of those who bought gifts, 71% offered their partner, 9% – a spouse and 7% – to a friend. The remaining 13% purchased gifts to parents, children, relatives, colleagues and fellow students. Of those who received gifts on this day, 73% received them from a partner, 8.2% of friends, 8.5% of their spouse, and the remaining 10.3% of parents, children, relatives, colleagues and fellow students.

What was purchased as a gift:

  • 37% preferred sweets,
  • 28% flowers,
  • 16.4% clothes,
  • 14.8% romantic dinner,
  • 4% cosmetics.

Most of the purchases were made in retail stores (81%), and only 10% bought online, and another 9% in online stores. To buy the above gifts, 81% paid in cash, 7% – a credit card and 12% – a debit card.

As the survey found out, most people spent this day, like everyone else (48%), 20% said that they did not plan anything because they do not believe it, 9% with a romantic dinner at home, 7% with friends, 9% With a romantic dinner in a restaurant and 4% ate a fast food in the institution.

75% of respondents who did not buy a gift said that they did this for the following reasons:

  • I have no partner/I have no relationship,
  • for economic reasons,
  • this is not a holiday/not celebrated/I do not see the reason,
  • is a commercial holiday, so I do not want to participate in this,
  • This is not even a holiday! This is a degradation of love to celebrate it one day a year! Love celebrates every day
  • Because my companion does not give me gifts, and I answer him the same.

However, most of the Greeks indifferent to Valentine's DayJudging by the answers 61.8%. Only 24.9% of respondents have a positive or very positive attitude to the holiday, while 13.3% have a negative attitude and very negative. It is noted that those who are in a relationship showed a higher positive and very positive attitude (32.2%) compared to married (20.5%), as well as people who are not in relations (14.2%) and diluted (13.6%).

The survey was attended by 692 people, of which 24% were men and 76% of women. The age categories: 61% were people 18-24 years old, 27%-at the age of 25-35 years old, 11%-36-50 years, and the remaining 1% aged 51 and older.

For available income: 38% reported income of less than 10,000 euros, 32% – from 10 001 to 20,000 euros, 16% – from 20 001 to 30,000 euros, and the remaining 14% have income per year from 30,001 euros.

The survey was conducted in 43 regions of Greece.
