The transplanted kidney of the pig was not the cause of the death of the recipient

When asked why a man with a pork kidney died, scientists received a convincing answer during the study: the reason is not in transplantation.

The first genetically condemned Pig's kidney functioned until the death of the recipient, it died 52 days after surgery from coronary heart disease. After the death of the man, the scientists checked the organ and did not find any signs of its rejection. This is evidenced by the results of the study, published In the journal New England Journal of Medicine.

Medpage Today tellsthat in 2018, Richard Slaiman, who suffered from kidney disease due to type 2 diabetes, received an organ from a posthumous donor. But soon I had to return to hemodialysis: the cause was the infection and deterioration due to diabetes. The body also lost strength due to recurrent diabetic nephropathy. Researchers note:

“The probability of obtaining transplantation for 5 years was only 16%. The patient had a 76% probability of dying or becoming too sick before getting an organ.”

In March 2024, a 62-year-old man was transplanted from a pig with 69 genomic changes. By that time, his anamnesis was already a myocardial infarction, severe vasculopathy, heart failure and total parathyroidctomy.

The transplant earned immediately. But a week after the operation, Richard’s tests worsened, and a month later, doctors were forced to conduct a biopsy of a transplanted kidney. Doctors did not see any signs of rejection of the organ who worked until the patient’s death.

We will remind, earlier FDA in the United States allowed biotechnological companies to experimental transplantation of pigs for patients with renal failure. The second patient with xenotransplantation has been living with a kidney transplanted pork for more than 2 months.

Earlier, in August 2023, we told how For the first time, pork buds transplanted to a person have taken root and function well. Successful operation was conducted by scientists from the University of Alabama: both buds of the patient who needed to transplant were replaced by genetically modified pork.

He diagnosed the death of the brain, and the transplant operation was carried out by permission of his family. The donor organs were not torn and functioned normally – they produced urine, cleansing the body of toxic products of life. This happened for the first time in the history of medicine.

The unique operation is described in detail in the material of the Jama Surgery scientific journal published on August 16. Her success gave hope to tens of thousands of patients in need of transplantation.
