Estonia: A Russian accused of Gosizman threatens 6 years in prison

In the Kharya County Court of Estonia, the prosecution requested six years of prison for Svetlana Burtseva, who has Russian and Estonian citizenship.

She is accused of gosmen and violation of international sanctions, reports ERR. The press secretary of the court of Viivik Siplane announced that the verdict in the Burtseva case would be announced on June 11. The lawyer petitioned for the issuance of an acquittal.

Since 2017, Svetlana Burtseva worked in the Russian media group “Russia Today” on various Estonian Internet publications. Its texts were published in Internet News. She continued cooperation with Russian resources even after the imposition of sanctions against the Russian Federation.

The indictment indicates that Burtseva knew about the ban on her activities, but continued it even after the stop of the work of the Sputnik Estonia news portal (Sputnik Eesti) due to violation of sanctions in 2019. In 2020-2023, Burtseva continued to produce media content for the Baltnews.ee portal using the pseudonym Alan Torm.

According to the State Prosecutor's Office, the evidence collected indicate that Burtseva deliberately violated international sanctions. State Prosecutor Enelie Laurits noted:

“According to the results of the pre -trial investigation, the security police (CAPO) came to the conclusion that Burtsev cannot be considered an independent, objective and neutral journalist. According to Kapo, the evidence collected indicate that Burtseva is a propagandist.”

Recently, the Tallinn Administrative Court was defended by the complaint of the activist Zoe Palyamar, who was the coordinator of the immortal regiment in Tallinn, to decide to deprive her of a residence permit in Estonia with a ten -year ban on entry into the Schengen zone.
