The European Commission claims to be able to solve the problem of excessive tourism in countries EU.
How tells EURONEWS, Apostolos Tsitsycostas, EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, on Thursday announced at the Destination Europe conference in Brussels about the beginning of wide consultations on the development of strategic tourism strategy:
“We see how residents protest against the overflow of cities, the cost of housing and the environmental burden in some basic tourist destinations. I am very serious about this. I will interact with all the affected local authorities and civil society in order to understand what and how the EU should do , share advanced experience, collect the necessary data in order to better manage tourist flows. “
First of all, Tsitsycostas had in mind speaking against excessive tourism in Spain. According to him, tourism should develop responsibly, attracting visitors who value authentic experience, supporting local enterprises and encouraging more travels in the offseason to “inaccessible” places. Having emphasized that this task will require cooperation between different sectors and government levels, he added:
“That is why this year we will hold wide consultations with interested parties. I want to hear from those who are in the field, from all of you, so that we can establish clear priorities for our strategy of sustainable tourism. And financing will really be a key factor.”
Tsitsikostas is the first commissar for tourism issues. Earlier, he served the post of governor of the tourist region for twelve years, and later headed the European Committee of the Regions. Speaking to the audience, he noted:
“Tourism is a topic that is very close to my heart and which I intend to support with all my heart and all my might. My goal is to show Europe as a safe, stable and outstanding tourist direction that attracts both international and internal travelers.”
Tsitsikostas assured that he would rely on supporting the tourist sector in the sale of key transport initiatives, “because transport and tourism are really connected.” He mentioned the uninterrupted sale of unified tickets for cross -border railway trips, as well as the simplification of cross -border rental of cars or more rigid regulation of passengers in the EU. And he promised: “At the beginning of my mandate, I will submit all these rules to combine European markets into a real single market.”
Previously, this topic was discussed in London, at the World Travel Market World Tourist Fair.
