The initiative to protect the mental health of children and adolescents is supported exclusively by the Stavros Niarhos Fund (SNF), Writes CNN GREECE, the results of the study are published in the scientific journal “European Children and Teenage Psychiatry”.
The study was conducted in 2022–2023 in a sample of 4,000 participants (1800 parents, 1,200 children aged 8-17 years, 400 teachers and 485 medical workers). Interesting facts were presented by a children and adolescence psychiatrist, the scientific director of the initiative Dr. Anastasia Kumulas.
She gave an interview on the occasion of the recent The discoveries of the reference center of mental health of children and adolescents at the University Psychiatric Clinic of the Athenian Medical School, in the Children's Hospital “Agia Sofia”. This reference center, together with four others – in Alexander Polys, Thessaloniki, Janin and Crete, form a network that operates as part of the initiative on the mental health of children and adolescents, supported exclusively by SNF, as part of the international initiative in the field of health health health. Anastasia Kumulas says:
“The assessment of the current situation that we conducted gave results that can be applied directly to our program, which began in 2021 and is implemented in partnership with the Greek state and in collaboration with the New York Children's Mind Institute. This study was very helpful in identifying the needs for the development of services and treatment methods, as well as the likelihood that people will gain access to these services. For example, half of the parents who needed psychiatric care for their children turned to the private sector. ”
Touching upon the causes of problems identified during the study, such as anxiety, depression and others, Dr. Komula states that there are studies that are trying to correlate social, personal and family problems with all these disorders:
“However, the reasons are multifactorial. We cannot explain each problem with one reason. Our life has changed, social conditions are now different. The speed with which we run every day is very different, children often do not receive due attention from the family, because there is no time and so on … ”
