In the center of Athens, a solemn event was held, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp in Birkenu. The solemn event in Athens was attended by two women-prisoners who managed to survive in concentration camps. They lit candles in honor of the dead.

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the largest of the Nazi concentration camps, where the most monstrous crime in the history of mankind was committed. Eight decades later, we continue to remember, to honor and promise “never again.” January 27 is the International Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust victims and, in addition, for Greece-the Memorial Day of the Greco-Jewish martyrs and heroes. Let's not calm down. The awareness of the responsibility that we bear as democratic citizens of the 21st century is to defend the society of equality, which will be based on the self -evident respect of human dignity and human rights. In practice, we must honor the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, struggling every day to prevent the repetition of such crimes, protecting the principles of freedom, democracy, equality and the rule of law. ”
President of the Central Jewish Council of Greece David Saltiel in his speech emphasized:
“80 years ago, the liberation of Auschwitz revealed the greatest crime in the history of mankind – the Holocaust of 6,000,000 Jews of Europe, committed by Nazi Germany and its allies. Today, more than ever, we have a sacred duty to indicate the tragic characteristics of the Holocaust of six million Jews. Let's remember the reason: they were Jews. Let's look at the motive: hatred and anti -Semitism. The Holocaust began from unjustified hatred of Jews and their religion. It is necessary to understand the history and uniqueness of the Holocaust of Jews in order to prevent its repetition. “
The state minister Akis Scertsos during the speech noted that “only two words are enough -“ never again ”:
“Never again we must endure and reconcile with the face of a monster, which justifies and legalizes hatred, violence, cruelty and, ultimately, the extermination of another, one who does not look like us. Auschwitz will become an eternal reminder of the darkness of the human soul and existence.” .
The Ambassador of the State of Israel to Greece Noah Katz said:
“Today we gathered to honor the memory of 6 million Jewish souls killed by Nazi troops, including 67,000 Greek Jews, 87% of all Jews of Greece. The Holocaust was the most gloomy head in the history of mankind in an attempt to destroy the whole people, the Jewish people. Today, in memory of the Holocaust, we honor the memory of the victims, honor the survivors and promise to fight hatred. ”
The President of the Israeli community of Greece Albertos Tarabulus noted in his speech:
“The Holocaust over time, as an event, seems somewhat more distant, which makes the task of memorizing the year harder. Gradually, but noticeably, surviving the Holocaust leave. But we will not stop honoring and respecting all the dead. ”
At the end of the event, awards were awarded to people who contributed to preserving the memory of the Holocaust, and the theater “Unknown number” was presented, according to the same play by Alberto Escenazi.
