Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias demanded from the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Dimitrios Khoupis carry out large-scale emergency personnel changes, and it soon became known that they would be fired 793 high-ranking officers.
In the announcement, this measure is described as “optimization”which was achieved within New structure of the armed forces. Unofficial information provides numerical data:
- Quantity brigadier generals Ground forces decreased by 36.
- Quantity rear admirals IUD decreased by 5.
- Quantity brigadier generals Air force decreased by 7.
- Quantity colonels decreased by 369.
- Quantity captains Navy decreased by 191.
- Quantity majors decreased by 185.
According to information from the ministry, which critically evaluates previous leadership of the Department of National Defense, the number of colonels who served in the Army before today's personnel changes was three times greater than the number of regular positions.
