The Greek government announces public international and open competition for the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources, in particular antimonyin the Northern region Chios. The corresponding decision was signed by the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Alexandra Sduku.
Two phases of the competition for antimony
The announcement of the international competition will take place in two phases. The first will be held invitation to submit applications (optional offers) up to March 10, 2025after which candidates who meet the criteria will be selected to proceed.
The second phase includes an invitation to submit binding proposals during the second quarter 2025 for leasing rights to explore and exploit mineral resources on a plot of 9.02 km² public mining space Chios.
Contract for research and exploitation of antimony
After the completion of the second phase, a contract will be concluded between the Greek state and the contractor for a period of 5 years for research and up to 30 years old for exploitation (subject to the discovery of significant deposits for development).
Besides, Ministry of Environment and Energy will ensure strict commitments on the part of the contractor to protect the environment, create jobs for the local population, pay a percentage of fixed and proportional rental payments to the municipality Chiosas well as the implementation of the overall signed Corporate Social Responsibility Program.
The Ministry of Environment and Energy is promoting the use of this public deposit as antimony (Sb) is listed critical mineral raw materials (CRMs), published EU.
It is a mineral with a variety of uses, including defense industry and in technology green transition. Our country is one of only two countries in Europe (along with Italy), possessing antimony deposits that have not yet been developed.
As emphasized, the use of Greek mineral resources will strengthen the efforts of our country and the whole European Union to diversify sources of raw materials and improve security of supplies.
