The key event of the 144th session of the International Olympic Committee, scheduled for March 19-21, will be the election of a new president. The venue for the meeting will be Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic Games.
The IOC press service said:
“The elections will be held in accordance with established procedures, but the date may be adjusted depending on the final agenda.”
The current president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, officially announced in August 2024 that he would not run for a new term. His departure opens the way for the selection of a new leader who will determine the further development of the Olympic movement. Bach has headed the IOC since 2013, pursuing a policy of reform and adapting the Olympic Games to modern challenges.
In addition to the presidential elections, within the framework of the 144th session of the IOC, tells GreekReporter:
- Discussion of strategies for the development of the Olympic Games.
- Approval of the budget and programs to support athletes.
- Addressing issues of sustainability and inclusion.
The session will be an important moment for shaping the future of the Olympic movement. So far, official candidates for the post of IOC president have not been announced, but experts are naming names, including current members of the IOC executive committee and leaders of national Olympic committees.
The future president will have to preserve the Olympic traditions and adapt them to modern realities, including political and economic challenges. The election of the IOC President will mark the beginning of a new stage in the history of the Olympic movement. Bach's departure leaves his successor with a difficult and important mission – to preserve the spirit of the Olympic Games while continuing reforms and developing their potential.
