A new scam, an attempt to deceive citizens, was launched on Saturday afternoon, January 18, by sending emails. In messages using the state emblem, unknown persons tried to convince potential victims that they had allegedly received a tax refund.
The new scam attempt may be related to last week's phishing attempts on Facebook accounts, as many people received more than one email titled “You have new tax refunds.”
The message appears to have been translated into Greek from another language, since we use the singular term “tax refund.” The rest of the letter had the same unstructured translation logic, which is noticeable if one is careful. The message said, quotes CNN Greece:
“Happy holiday, citizens! After reviewing your tax information, we found that you may be eligible for a tax refund. To ensure that the funds are credited to the correct account, we need to verify the information you provide. Click the link below to confirm your details and begin the tax refund application process. Once your details are verified, your funds will be credited to your account within the next 24 hours. Thank you for your patience.”
