For the strong-willed: amfootball in Ukraine (video)

The Winter Cup of the Duzhikh League was held in Kyiv, it was held on January 11-12 by the Ukrainian Football Association for athletes with amputated legs or arms.

This is the first football tournament for military amputees. UAF President Andrei Shevchenko said at the opening of the competition that in Ukraine “there are more than 100 thousand people with amputations of limbs.” Many of them are military personnel who were wounded while defending Ukraine.

In the tournament participated five amateur teams: AMP FC Kiev, MSK Dnepr, FC Pokrova AMP, FC Pokrova-2 and Shakhtar Steel. The tournament included 11 matches, the winner was the team from Lvov “Pokrova-2”. Second place goes to the newly created team “Kyiv”, which includes both men and women. Dmitry Kuts, a football player from Pokrov-2, recognized as one of the best scorers of the tournament, said:

“This is very important for the military; amfootball provides an opportunity to rehabilitate and return to society. Thanks to football, I don’t notice that I don’t have a leg.”

The Winter Cup of the Duzhikh League is the first step towards the creation of a full-fledged system of amp-football competitions in Ukraine. UAF plans to actively develop this area as one of the priorities for the next years
