New wave of snowfalls in Greece

“The General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr) has informed the relevant public services, as well as the regions and municipalities of the country, to be on high alert for civil protection in order to immediately cope with the consequences of intense weather events phenomena. Particularly in areas where heavy rain, thunderstorms or hurricane-force winds are expected, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection recommends that citizens:

  • Secure items that could be carried away by severe weather and cause damage or injury.
  • Make sure gutters and drains in homes are not clogged and are functioning properly.
  • Avoid crossing streams and streams, either on foot or by vehicle, during thunderstorms and rains, and for several hours after them.
  • Avoid outdoor work and activities in marine and coastal areas during intense weather conditions (risk of lightning strikes).

In areas where snowfall and frost are expected, if you are going to travel by car:

  • Find out about the weather and road network conditions.
  • Have anti-slip chains and a full tank of fuel in your vehicle.
  • Travel if necessary, preferably during the daytime, choosing central roads.
  • Inform your loved ones about the route you are going to take.
  • Change your travel plans to avoid peak weather events.
  • Strictly follow the instructions of local authorities such as the traffic police.

If you are traveling on foot:

  • Dress in several layers of light clothing instead of just heavy clothing, and wear appropriate shoes to avoid injury from slippery conditions.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel during peak weather events (heavy snow, freezing conditions).
