A 9-year-old child wanted to win currency on Roblox*, but… something went wrong

In Russia, a child gave 500,000 rubles to scammers using his mother’s phone. The State Duma is discussing a bill on child protection.

A nine-year-old boy took part in a currency draw on Roblox*. At first glance, it was so easy – to win, he had to “complete a few simple tasks” on his mother’s phone.

On January 3, Russian woman Zhanna saw a suspicious picture: her son Igor was trying to access the banking application from her phone. The woman immediately took her mobile phone to log into her personal account, but… the application and account were already blocked.

The mother demanded an explanation from Igor, and he admitted that he had made several transfers to a certain Ibrahim. He said that some time ago he found a channel in the messenger with a drawing for Roblox currency and clicked the “participate” button.

After that, he corresponded with a certain girl who suggested that Igor plant a tree with gold coins, says the Baza telegram channel, and get a lot of Robux. To do this, it was necessary to complete several “simple tasks”. The boy diligently followed the instructions of his interlocutor:

  • he took screenshots of personal accounts from his mother’s phone,
  • purchased two marketplace certificates for 75,000 rubles,
  • called the activation codes,
  • transferred all of my mother’s savings from the savings account to the main one, and then to someone else’s card.

However, the upset child never found the Robux in his account. His mother had to write a statement to the police. The total damage amounted to 504,000 rubles. A criminal case has been initiated under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Fraud”).

Meanwhile, the State Duma is thinking about protecting children from video games. There is no talk of a complete ban on video games in the Russian Federation, Volodin said, speaking about bill on protecting children from destructive content. 71% of those who voted in his Telegram channel supported the idea of protecting children from stories containing violence, aggression and values alien to Russia.

“In recent years, there have been a number of incidents of attacks by students on students and teachers in schools. The actions were provoked by their participation in video games,” added the State Duma speaker. According to him, they plan to involve parents, teachers, industry representatives and psychologists in discussing the law.

“The decision we come to must necessarily be balanced… And of course, you are right, we need to develop and produce domestic content,” Volodin emphasized.

*Robux is the in-game currency that gamers use in Roblox. They can be purchased directly from the Roblox website or you can buy gift cards from retailers like Best Buy and Amazon. Unlike V-Bucks, Fortnite's currency, Robux can be used to purchase upgrades for avatars or special abilities, as well as games.
