Greek Defense Minister initiates emergency reshuffles in the leadership of the armed forces

Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias addressed the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces (ΓΕΕΘΑ) General Dimitris Houpis requesting emergency appointments in the armed forces.

This specifically applies to ranks vice admiral and rear admiral Navy, as well as major general and lieutenant general Air Force. The purpose of emergency appointments is accelerating the implementation of the new force structure as part of the “Agenda 2030” (Ατζέντας 2030) to reform the armed forces, optimizing the number of senior officers and adapting the recently approved new force structure to modern operational requirements.

Appointments were deemed necessary due to excessive number of officers in senior ranks, above and beyond established positions, to make the armed forces more flexible, as envisaged in the new armed forces structure recently approved Cabinet of Ministers of Greece (ΚΥΣΕΑ).

It is noteworthy that among colonels the number of positions held is more than twice the staffing level. Emergency appointments began with ranks vice admiral and rear admiral Navy, as well as major general and lieutenant general Air Force, and will continue with appointments brigadiers and colonels.
