Health Minister promises better lives for diabetics

On December 18, an important meeting took place between representatives of the Panhellenic Federation of Societies and Associations of People with Diabetes (ΠΟΣΣΑΣΔΙΑ) and the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis.

The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss current problems faced by more 1.2 million patients with diabetes in Greece.

The meeting was attended by key figures from the PΟΣΣΑΣΔΙΑ, including President Christos Daramillas and other members of the leadership. One of the central issues of discussion was the inclusion of glucose monitoring systems (CGM) in the reimbursement system ΕΟΠΥΥ for patients with type 2 diabetes receiving insulin therapy. Minister Georgiadis confirmed his commitment to implement this decision in 2025.

Also on the agenda was the issue of clawback—excessive financial burden on companies providing medical products for diabetics. Representatives of PΟΣΣΑΣΔΙΑ expressed fears that if the situation does not change, this could lead to the withdrawal of these companies from the Greek market, which will create serious risks to the health of patients.

Minister Georgiadis pledged to take action to reduce this burden to ensure continued supply of essential medical supplies and support patients' efforts to manage their disease.

In addition, PΟΣΣΑΣΔΙΑ presented a proposal to implement a program aimed at strengthening and qualitatively improving the associations of its members. The program includes specialized education, navigation through the health care system, and psychosocial support, especially for children with type 1 diabetes. The proposal was received positively by the minister, and further study of the conditions for its implementation is expected.

The Panhellenic Federation of Societies and Associations of People with Diabetes (ΠΟΣΣΑΣΔΙΑ) was founded in 1997 and represents the interests of the majority of people with diabetes in Greece. The main goals of the organization are to inform, prevent and protect the rights of people with diabetes.
