The end of free parking for electric vehicles after citizens were initially persuaded to buy them

Free parking in supervised parking zones for electric vehicles ceased on January 1.

The legislation allowing free parking for electric vehicles stipulated that the measure would last until December 31, 2024, and so far there have been no extensions or amendments.

The measure was withdrawn without any notice or announcement from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, causing upset among electric vehicle owners. Many of them found that they could no longer issue the corresponding free parking certificate through the gov.gr platform, leaving citizens without clear instructions on how to manage your parking needs.

So far, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has not provided any official explanation for this change. It's not clear whether this is a complete change in policy regarding electric vehicle parking, or whether there simply wasn't a timely FEC update enshrining free parking.

Consequences for electric vehicle owners As road safety consultant Kimon Logothetis comments:

“The removal of free parking is expected to increase the operating costs of electric vehicles in urban areas. Free parking has been an important incentive to encourage the use of electric vehicles, especially in congested cities. Removing this privilege could alienate future EV buyers, calling into question the country's strategy to transition to sustainable mobility.

Electric vehicle owners expect the government to clarify its intentions and take a definite position. It remains an open question whether the free parking measure will be brought back or whether its removal is part of wider policy changes. In any case, the sudden cessation of this measure indicates the need for more careful planning and communication with citizens.”

The coming weeks will show whether there will be developments or this change is permanent. Electric vehicle owners are still asked to pay for parking, just like other drivers.

The end result, of course, is that after the government has done everything to convince people to buy electric cars by providing incentives and benefits, they are now shamelessly taking them away!
