Canada: Justin Trudeau announces resignation (video)

Justin Trudeau is stepping down as Prime Minister of Canada and as leader of his Liberal Party.

He announced this on January 6, writes “European truth”. At a press conference in Ottawa, the prime minister recalled his government's achievements in recent years, including support for Ukraine, but acknowledged differences within his party about how to move forward:

“I intend to resign as party leader and prime minister once the party selects its next leader – through a robust, national and competitive process.”

The publication reports that Justin Trudeau will continue to serve as head of the Canadian government until a successor is elected. The Canadian Prime Minister said that he asked the Governor General of Canada (representative of the British monarch) Mary Simon to suspend parliament until March 24, and she granted this request.

A suspension, or prorogation, is necessary to present an updated government program. It is possible that by then the Liberal Party will find a replacement for Trudeau to lead the government.

And the Canadian opposition is already calling for early parliamentary elections to form a stable government capable of working with the administration of newly elected President Donald Trump over the next four years.

Let us recall that in December, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Canada of Ukrainian origin, Chrystia Freeland, unexpectedly resigned, citing disagreements with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the reason for the decision.

Donald Trump, after Trudeau's resignation, invited Canada to join the United States:

“Happy Christmas to Canadian Governor Justin Trudeau, whose citizens' taxes are too high, but if Canada becomes our 51st state, their taxes will be cut by over 60%, their business will immediately double, and they will be militarily protected.”
