6,000 Christmas trees ready for recycling in Thessaloniki

About 6 thousand New Year trees that decorated Greek homes and organizations this year will be recycled in Thessaloniki as part of a recycling program.

The campaign, as in previous years, is again carried out by the Solid Waste Management Agency (FoDSA) of Central Macedonia. More and more informed citizens are participating in this useful action, says the President of the Agency, Michalis Geranis:

“The culture of local societies is changing, they understand that natural sawdust must return to mother earth. Year after year, the number of Christmas trees that are collected and processed increases, and we estimate that this year we will reach 6,000 trees.”

Under the motto “No Christmas tree should end up in a landfill,” FoDSA has already distributed the necessary wood shredders and informed municipalities throughout the Thessaloniki metropolitan area about the recycling effort, which will begin on January 8th.

The Municipality of Pilaya Hortiati has already announced in today's announcement that all trees are recycled after receiving a call from citizens on the number 15195 or e-15195 – you just need to give your address.

Then municipal brigades, writes CNN Greece, natural spruce trees will be collected and delivered to a special area in the Tagarades Ecological Park. There they will be crushed for processing into biofuels and fertilizers.

The remaining municipalities of Thessaloniki will make similar announcements: the waste recycling campaign will begin on January 8 and end two weeks later.
