An aviation safety expert believes the deaths of the Jeju Air Boeing passengers could have been avoided if
the runway did not end with a “rigid structure”. David Learmonth from Britain claims that the cause of death of the Boeing crew and passengers was airplane collision with a concrete structure behind the runway.
The plane crash in South Korea, which killed 179 people, was caused by a barrier that was located almost immediately behind the runway, which should not have been at the airport. British expert says quotes euronews:
“I am shocked by what happened because in this case, the cause of death was not the pilot’s failure to lower the flaps and landing gear for landing. The passengers died because the aircraft collided with a rigid structure behind the runway where there should not have been one.” .
The structure, with radio beacons mounted on top, was used to regulate aircraft movements at night or in bad weather. She was only 250 meters from where the runway ends. According to the expert, as a rule, such devices are installed directly on the ground, and not on a concrete pedestal, as in this case. The death of the Boeing crew and passengers could have been prevented, he believes. The expert emphasizes:
“The pilot needed to land the plane very quickly. That's why he drove off the edge of the runway. And precisely because planes sometimes drive off the edge of the runway, such rigid structures are not installed immediately behind it.”
South Korean authorities said they would assess the role of the “rigid structure” in the crash. It is reported that radio navigation systems on concrete foundations have been found at other South Korean airports. Acting South Korean President Choi Sang-mok has ordered a thorough review of aviation security throughout the country.
