800 thousand car owners did not have money to pay road tax

According to ΥΠΟΙΚ (Ministry of Finance), approx. 800,000 drivers (12% of car owners in Greece) did not pay the car tax on time for 2025because the deadline has expired December 31.

According to ΑΑΔΕ (Secretariat General of Revenue), out of total 6.7 million car taxes paid on time for 5.9 millionwhich amounts to 88%. This indicator 12%, more than 10%who were unable to pay tax in 2024but then the deadline expired March 4 after several extensions. This means that without renewals this year, the percentage of those unable to pay has increased even further.

What are the penalties?

As ΑΑΔΕ reminds, the fine for late payment of transport taxes is calculated as follows:

  • 25% from the tax amount, if payment is made before January 31, 2025,
  • 50% from the tax amount if payment was made in February 2025,
  • 100% from the tax amount, if payment is made with March 1, 2025.

The fine is also 100% from the amount if taxes are paid partially or not paid at all.

Unlike last year, this year there was no no extensions to pay transport taxes, as the Ministry of National Economy and Finance has repeatedly warned.

The government's official explanation for the strict deadline is that, unlike last year, when transport taxes doubled from the first day of delinquency, this year a system of phased increases is being applied.

These figures further highlight the abyss into which Greece is sliding. About the reasons in the material Seven facts about Greece's national decline.
