Prices for food for the holiday table


The New Year always brings with it an atmosphere of celebration and celebration. But the cost of this often brings a “headache”. What is the cost of popular meat dishes, sweets and, of course, king cake (Vasilopita) this year?

Prices for food items such as meat dishes and sweets have actually increased in 2024 compared to last year. This is due to a number of factors, including changes in raw material prices, transportation costs and changes in tax policies.

For example, prices for meat dishes increased by 10%, and for sweets and king cakes by 15%. These changes have affected many consumers who have noticed rising food costs.

In particular, as for Vasilopita, in bakeries this year it is sold at a price of 14 to 17 euros per kilogram, and in pastry shops – from 15 to 18 euros. According to ERT, prices for melomacarona start at 15 euros per kilogram, and for courabiedes from 15 to 20 euros per kilogram.

A Christmas Hamper is available in supermarkets until January 3, with prices slightly lower than last year.

Reporters note increased traffic at the central open market of Athens – Varvakeio Agora. However, there is also pandemonium in supermarkets. Citizens are trying to stock up on food for the upcoming New Year.

Approximately, prices in Varvakei Agora start from:

  • pork from 5 euros per kilogram
  • turkey from 7 euros per kilogram
  • beef from 8 euros per kilogram
  • lamb from 10 euros per kilogram.

But in general, the treat will cost quite a significant amount.

At the moment, there is no accurate information on the average cost of a New Year's table in Athens. However, given current food prices and rising prices, we can expect that the total cost of the New Year's table could be approximately 200-300 euros for a family of four.
