After heavy holiday feasts, many people think about doing a detox, but they don’t always understand how to do it correctly. Juices and smoothies may seem like a great option, as they promise quick weight loss and improved overall body tone.
However, according to nutritionist Rocío Praxedes, These detoxification methods may be hazardous to your health. He explains that although fruits and vegetables are staples in the daily diet, they cannot provide the body with all the nutrients it needs.
In addition, in juices and smoothies contain large amounts of oxalates – compounds that can cause kidney problems and interfere with the absorption of certain nutrients and nitrates. It's also worth paying attention to the number of calories and carbohydrates in many smoothies, as they may contain excessive amounts of sugar.
Beatriz Robles, food technologist and nutritionist, emphasizes the dangers of green juices and smoothies for detoxifying the body. She argues that these drinks are not as filling as whole fruit and create a “false security effect” because by consuming them we think we are getting enough fruits and vegetables to be a healthy diet.
Lourdes de la Bastida, another nutritionist, warns against intermittent fasting. She warns that compensating for large meals by fasting can have serious health consequences, since overeating causes a metabolic imbalance that can lead to hyperglycemia, and a long interval in food consumption can lead to hypoglycemia.
And one last piece of advice from a nutritionist: to compensate for overeating, exercise, such as walking, is necessary. Movement allows the body to use glucose as energy rather than storing it as fat.
